Chiropractic Adjustment/Manipulation

Definition:

A chiropractic adjustment, also known as joint manipulation, is a procedure where a chiropractor uses their hands or a small instrument to apply controlled, sudden force to a joint. The goal is to improve joint motion and enhance the body’s physical function.

Safety:

General Safety: Chiropractic adjustments are safe when performed by a trained and licensed chiropractor. Serious complications are very rare.

Side Effects: Common side effects include temporary headaches, fatigue, or discomfort in the treated areas.

What to Expect:

Initial Consultation: Your chiropractor will take a detailed medical history, perform a physical exam, and may use diagnostic imaging to determine the appropriate treatment.

Treatment: During the adjustment, you may lie face down, on your side, or on a special chiropractic table. The chiropractor will perform some soft tissue therapy in the form of a massage with their hands or with a tool (Soft Tissue Treatments) before using their hands or a small instrument to apply a controlled, sudden force to a joint.

Sensations: You might hear popping or cracking sounds as your chiropractor manipulates your joints. This is due to a change of pressure inside the joint that changes some of the joint fluid into gas. These gas bubbles collapse, resulting in the popping sounds, similar to cracking knuckles.

Post-Treatment: After the adjustment, you may feel relief from symptoms, increased range of motion, or improved function. Some people may experience mild soreness or discomfort that usually resolves within a day or two.

Benefits of Chiropractic Adjustments

Pain Relief: Chiropractic adjustments can effectively reduce pain, particularly in the lower back, neck, shoulder, arm, hip, leg, and for headaches.

Improved Mobility: By improving the function of the spine and other joints (like those in the arms and legs), adjustments can enhance overall mobility and range of motion.

Posture Improvement: Regular chiropractic care can help correct poor posture, reducing strain on the spine and improving overall body alignment.

Enhanced Athletic Performance: Athletes often use chiropractic care to improve performance, prevent injuries, and reduce recovery time.

Non-invasive Treatment: Chiropractic adjustments provide a non-surgical and drug-free approach to managing neuro-musculoskeletal issues.

Potential Risks of Chiropractic Adjustments

Minor Side Effects: Common side effects include temporary soreness or discomfort in the treated area, fatigue, or headaches.

Serious Complications: Rare, but serious complications can occur.

Temporary Increase in Pain: In some cases, individuals might experience a temporary increase in pain or discomfort following an adjustment. This reaction to treatment is normal, but consult your chiropractor if you experience any worsening of your symptoms.

Considerations for Safety

Qualified Practitioner: Ensure your chiropractor is licensed and has the appropriate training and experience.

Medical History: Provide a complete medical history to your chiropractor, including any existing medical conditions or previous surgeries and/or injuries.

Follow-Up Care: Adhere to any follow-up care instructions provided by your chiropractor to ensure the best outcomes and reduce the risk of complications.

Listen to Your Body: If you experience significant pain, dizziness, or any unusual symptoms after an adjustment, contact your chiropractor immediately.

Summary

Chiropractic adjustments can offer significant benefits, especially for pain relief and improved mobility. Always consult with a qualified chiropractor and provide them with your full medical history to make an informed decision about your care.
